Memorial Bridge, Bangkok, Thailand
5 images Created 7 Sep 2014
Bridge-builders Dorman Long from Middlesbrough, England started building the first bridge to connect Bangkok with Thonburi on 3 December 1929. The 16.68 metres (55 feet) wide, 229.76 metres (754 feet) long, bridge was opened on 6 April 1932.
During World War II Allied bombers flew from Rangoon until it fell to the Japanese on 7 March 1942 and then they flew from India. They targeted installations, which were useful to the occupying Japanese military, such as the Port of Bangkok and the Thai railway system. They also hoped to put pressure on the Thai government to abandon its alliance with Japan.
On 5 June 1944 seventy-seven US Air Force bombers planned to demolish Memorial Bridge, but instead destroyed a Japanese military hospital and the Japanese secret police headquarters 2 kilometres (1.2 miles) away.
After the liberation of Rangoon on 3 May 1945, they flew again from Rangoon until the end of the war in August that year.
There’s a local night market selling clothes every night, except Wednesdays, from 5 pm until 11 pm.
