Maeklong Railway Market, about 37 miles west of Bangkok, is one of the largest fresh seafood markets in Thailand, and is centred along the railway track. When a train approaches, it honks, and the vendors instantly roll back the awnings and shop fronts on wheels, to be replaced immediately the train has passed. Some low trays are just left and the train passes over them. It runs straight through the middle of the market. People have been killed. The station is just beyond the market and was built in the 1900s to transport produce from the fishing ports of Samut Sakhon and Samut Songkram to the Bangkok markets.
