18 imagesOn 5 January 2019 the iconic Dusit Thani Hotel, Bangkok, closed its doors. Dusit Thani means ‘Heavenly City’. These photographs were taken on that sad day. It was one of the earliest, 5-star hotels in the city, known for its famous guest list, including Gwyneth Paltrow, Whitney Houston, Ronald Reagan and Tom Jones, and striking modernist architecture. At that time, Bangkok was full of American GIs, who were fighting the Vietnam War. They were there for rest and recreation. Most Bangkok hotels were emphasising Western modernity, but the Dusit Thai concentrated on Thainess. There were 517 rooms and suites and a funky hexagonal pool. The hotel was on the corner of Rama IV and Silom roads across from Lumphini Park and opened on 27 February 1970. It was then Bangkok's tallest hotel, designed by Japanese architect Yozo Shibata and had a golden spire on top of the roof, inspired by Bangkok's Wat Run, Temple of Dawn, up the river. It was a favourite dining and events location, especially for weddings of the rich and famous. More than 20,000 couples were married in the hotel’s Grand Ballroom. At one time there was a white elephant standing outside at the front. The Dusit Thani was the creation of Chanut Piyaoui. She opened her first Bangkok hotel, the 3 star Princess Hotel, in 1948. Over the next seven decades, her company owned 29 hotels in 18 countries – 9 self-owned and 20 managed. Dusit International also manages 240 luxury villas in Indonesia, Thailand, Sri Lanka and the Maldives. It will be replaced by a mixed-use 440,000 square metre development on a 60 year lease. Upon completion in 2023/24, the project will comprise the 39 storey, 250 room Dusit Thani Bangkok Hotel, all rooms with a view of Lumphini Park, a 69 storey residences condominium, an 80,000 square metre Central Park Shopping Complex and 40 storey Central Park Offices. The investment is estimated to be 36.7 billion baht (US$1.16 billion). There will be a golden spire on the rooftop and an indoor waterfall. The Hindu/Buddhist shrine near the junction of Silom and Rama IV roads will be kept. So will the banyan tree planted by Chanut decades ago.

22 imagesIn the 19th century all foreign legations and embassies were built on or near the Chao Phraya River as it was the easiest way to get to the Royal Palace a little bit further up the river. The French have a long history of diplomatic relations with Thailand. There was an embassy in the former capital of Ayutthaya in the 17th century and Siam (as Thailand was then called) sent an embassy to visit King Louis XIV at Versailles. The French Embassy is the second oldest in Bangkok (the Portuguese Embassy being a bit older). Originally it was both the French Embassy and the French Ambassador's Residence and was built in 1860. It is now just the French Ambassador's Residence and has been added to and renovated over the years. There was a major restoration between 1959 and 1968. It is an architectural masterpiece. The three-story timber building has a two-storey front porch facing the river with outdoor staircases on either side. Fine timber fretwork runs along the eaves. The house overlooks a well-proportioned lawn down to a private pier on the river. There is a broad verandah on the upper floors. The first floor is used for guests and receptions and the French Ambassador lives on the top floor. It is not open to the public. The 16.68 metres (55 feet) wide, 229.76 metres (754 feet) long, bridge was opened on 6 April 1932. During World War II Allied bombers flew from Rangoon until it fell to the Japanese on 7 March 1942 and then they flew from India. They targeted installations, which were useful to the occupying Japanese military, such as the Port of Bangkok and the Thai railway system. They also hoped to put pressure on the Thai government to abandon its alliance with Japan. On 5 June 1944 seventy-seven US Air Force bombers planned to demolish Memorial Bridge, but instead destroyed a Japanese military hospital and the Japanese secret police headquarters 2 kilometres (1.2 miles) away. After the liberation of Rangoon on 3 May 1945, they flew again from Rangoon until the end of the war in August that year. 13 imagesMuay Thai or Thai boxing is a combat sport of Thailand that uses stand-up striking and various clinching techniques. In Western boxing, the two fighters are separated when they clinch; in Muay Thai, they are not. It is often in the clinch where knee and elbow techniques are used. It is known as the "art of eight limbs" as it is characterized by the combined use of fists, elbows, knees, and shins. as opposed to "two points" (fists) in boxing and "four points" (hands and feet) used in other more regulated combat sports, such as kickboxing and savate. Muay Thai started to become widespread internationally in the 20th century. It became enterainment in Thai restaurants, such as the Busabong in London. The history of Muay Thai can be traced to the middle of the 18th century. During the battles between the Burmese of the Konbaung Dynasty and Siam, the famous fighter Nai Khanomtom was captured in 1767. The Burmese knew of his expertise in hand-to-hand combat and gave him a chance to fight for his freedom. Nai Khanomtom knocked out ten consecutive Burmese opponents. Impressed by his skill, the Burmese freed and allowed him to return to Siam. He was acknowledged as a hero, and his fighting style became known as Siamese-Style boxing, later known as Muay Thai. Muay Thai soon became recognized as a national sport. Spectators went to watch. Contests gradually became part of local festivals and celebrations, especially those at temples. The previously bare-fisted fighters started wearing lengths of hemp rope around their hands and forearms. A practitioner of Muay Thai is known as a Nak Muay. Western practitioners are called Nak Muay Farang, meaning "foreign boxer". King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) ascended to the throne in 1868 and introduced a golden age for Muay Thai. The king had a personal interest in the sport. Most professional Thai boxers come from the lower economic backgrounds, and the fight money (after the other parties get their cut) is their sole means of support and their families. Due to the rigorous training (some Thai boxers fight almost every other week) professional boxers in Thailand have relatively short careers. Many retire from competition and teach the next generation of Thai fighters. She was a devout Buddhist of the Maha Nikaya sect and she and her girls collected money for the temple. When Rama V became king, her family renovated the temple and asked him for a name. He called it Wat Kanikapon, which means 'temple built from the earnings of prostitution'. The original Buddha image is still there. The window frames are like the green curtains, which indicated a brothel in Chinatown. Madame Faeng invited Father To, a renowned monk, to deliver a sermon for the temple's opening. There are six "villages" in the park, equipped with showers, portable toilets, washing machines, a medical centre and even a part-time school. There are 2,300 security volunteers manning checkpoints. When I was there in April, taking these photographs, the mood was friendly and relaxed. It was like a street party with speeches. 60 imagesThe most beautiful and popular ceremony in Thailand is Loy Krathong celebrated in the second Lanna lunar month which is in November or December. It is thought to have originated in Thailand about 700 years ago and its purpose is to pay tribute to the goddess of rivers and waterways and thank her for providing water to the farmers. On the night banana leaf boats with a candle and incense are floated away in the river along with, one hope's, all evils and problems in the year to come. In Chiang Mai there are special events: sending thousands of hot air balloons into the sky to carry away bad luck and one's wishes to heaven. The balloons are 6 - 8 feet tall, made of paper and held up by 3 or 4 people. Paper is burned in a canister until the balloon is filled with enough hot air to lift it way up into the sky. There are also parades, beauty contests, and firecrackers. For the ebook The Bangkok Story, an Historical Guide to the Most Exciting City in the World - go to https://murnis.com/ebookstore/

31 imagesLoi Krathong is celebrated annually throughout Thailand on the evening of the full moon of the 12th month in the traditional Thai lunar calendar, usually in November. It is the end of the rainy season. People let loose thousands of lanterns (khom loi) into the sky where they gracefully float. They are usually made from a thin fabric, such as rice paper, to which a candle or fuel cell is attached. When the fuel cell is lit, the resulting hot air which is trapped inside the lantern creates enough lift for the khom loi to float up into the sky. here are thousands of them and most Buddhist temples participate. There is usually a beauty contest and in Chiang Mai a long parade. For the ebook The Bangkok Story, an Historical Guide to the Most Exciting City in the World - go to https://murnis.com/ebookstore/

45 imagesChiang Mai's temples are perhaps the most interesting of its many attractions. Unlike Bangkok, where few temples are more than 200 years old, some temples in Chiang Mai are as old as the city, which celebrated its 700th anniversary in 1996. There are more than 300. I spent a morning walking through the old city with a local friend and it was so good I went back the next day on my own.
